By 2050, the world’s population could grow by 2 billion and reach 9.7 billion. 70% of the population is expected to live in cities. As the world continues to urbanise, we need to address the way cities produce and use energy, to address greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and allow society to successfully accelerate the energy transition.
The objective for organising this challenge is to identify and promote innovative, out-of-the-box ideas and solutions to the city decarbonisation problem
The challenge is open to all registered start-ups (minimum 2 staff members). Start-ups can be on different TRL levels (stage 2-5, with only pre-seed or seed funding received; stage 6-9 with early revenues, market validation by pilot(s); Series A funding or higher).
The innovative technologies, such as data science, machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, and AI, offered by the start-up community, are leading the pathway to a cleaner-energy future for cities. Shell, together with CogX, is looking for this kind of novel, out-of-the-box solutions to systematically integrate the energy generation and storage in cities, on a significant scale.
Vuala was shortlisted as the final top 10 in the competition.
